About SDSEA

The San Diego Science Educators Association is a professional membership organization supporting science educators.

Our mission is to promote science literacy and advocate for science education by advancing professionalism, leadership, and community outreach. The Board of Directors consists of all volunteer science educators, informal educators, and community members.

SDSEA History

The San Diego Science Educators Association came into being in the fall of 1986. It was the successor to the Greater San Diego Science Teachers Association, which had been active since the 1960's.   The first meeting was called by Dr. Robert Dean, then County Coordinator of Science, who brought together science educators from throughout San Diego County to provide support for science education.

This group quickly set out to become the main sponsor of a nascent county- wide conference which had been started  in 1984 by Dr. Fran Slowizcek, a science resource teacher with the County.  With the help of  Dr. Vance Mills at San Diego City Schools, attendance during the next 10 years at the SDSEA Conference  grew from 200 to nearly 3000 attendees. Since then the SDSEA has sponsored a conference every year when the NSTA was not nearby.

Since 1985 the SDSEA  has sponsored  Awards for Excellence  in Science Teaching for Elementary, Middle School, and High School Teachers;  awards for  informal science; awards for university level science advocates; and awards for science fair students.

In addition, the SDSEA sponsors scholarships to teachers who are attending conferences or workshops.  We advocate for science education at all levels.

The SDSEA is and remains THE professional teacher support organization supported by members in San Diego County.  It is affiliated with the California Science Teachers Association and the National Science Teachers Association.

What is the Zend Optimizer?

The Zend Optimizer is one of the most popular PHP plugins for performance-improvement, and has been available without charge, since the early days of PHP 4. It improves performance by scanning PHP's intermediate code and passing it through multiple Optimization Passes to replace inefficient code patterns with more efficient code blocks. The replaced code blocks perform exactly the same operations as the original code, only faster.

In addition to improving performance, the Zend Optimizer also enables PHP to transparently load files encoded by the Zend Guard.

The Zend Optimizer is a free product available for download from Zend Technologies. Zend Technologies also developed the PHP scripting engine, known as the Zend Engine.
